How do I get started on machine embroidery?

The first step is to own the right kind of machine. We carry several models:Bernina 580 Sewing and Embroidery Machine
Bernina 830
Bernina 580
Bernina 630 and 640
Deco 340
(embroidery only)

Do you have classes?

Each machine will come with our Embroidery Mastery classes. This is a series of 3 classes taught on the first Saturday of each month from 10 am-3 pm. We repeat the series every 3 month. You get all the information you need to get your started. Once you have completed this series, we encourage to attend Embroidery Club, a monthly class that meets on the third Friday of each month. We will embroider a different project each month, and all you need to bring is your machine and your module, and some bobbin thread. We will provide a kit and thread.

Do I need special thread?

Yes, we carry the entire line of Isacord machine embroidery thread. It comes in over 350 gorgeous colors.
We also have Art Bin storage boxes which are designed to hold your Isacord collection, and keep them dust-free.

What is stabilizer?

Stabilizer is an extra layer of fiber that helps support all the stitches that embroidery involves. There are many products available. We carry the full range of OESD Stabilizers. If you are not sure which product is appropriate for your project, just ask in the store for one of our embroiders on staff to recommend one.
Stabilzers can be grouped into several categories:
Cut Away
Tear Away
Wash Away
Fusible
Think about the project you are going to embroider on, and use the heaviest stabilizer the project can handle. If the stabilizer can be left in and will not be seen, use a cut-away. If the stabilizer needs to be removed, use a tear-away. Wash away is used for lacey designs, or when a topping is needed, such as for terry-cloth. It will completely disappear after the item is washed. Fusibles are used when some light support is needed and the stabilizer can stay in, such as in a quilt. Please ask us for help in deciding what is the best product to try for your particular project. If you are just getting started click here for info about which stabilizers to start with.
